Godmanchester
Godmanchester is a beautiful waterside town located just a mile from Huntingdon, on the other side of the River Great Ouse. Full of centuries-old buildings and with a rich history, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
Take a stroll along Queen’s Walk, the riverside path, to admire the scenery. You’ll get a unique viewpoint on many of the town’s old homes, with their own private river moorings.
The Old Bridge, connecting Godmanchester with the neighbouring town of Huntingdon, is a Grade I listed structure - and it’s still in use today. The town’s St Mary’s church is also a Grade I listed building, with parts of its structure dating back to the 13th century, and as you walk around the town, you’ll spot many more Tudor and Georgian buildings.
Keep an eye out for Island Hall, the Grade II* listed Georgian mansion house, built in 1740. Requisitioned during WWII by first the WAAF and then the RAF’s Pathfinder Squadron, the house was rescued from ruin in the late 1970s and has been a private family home since 1983.
There are plenty of spots to take a break after your walk. Grab a pub lunch or a pint at The Exhibition or The Black Bull pubs, or visit Pinnies tea room for a pot of tea and a slice of cake.
